You Don’t Understand What I Mean

No, I don’t remember you telling me this. Yes, I told you this clearly, but you don’t listen to me.

We might have heard of the above conversation in multiple places like at home, school, offices. People try to communicate, but many times, there is a misunderstanding.

So why does this happen? Why do we see such a communication gap? The reason is not always ignorance or not listening carefully while we communicate. This is our Mind game which is happening all the time.

On social media, while posting any new photo nowadays, we apply filters to make that picture look beautiful. Similarly, while we are feeding information to our brain, we apply filters to it. But the only difference is it will not always make that look or feel beautiful. Yes, that is right unconsciously for all of us; filters are applied to anything we learn.

When I say, learning don’t misunderstand it by things like study which we do in school, college or while appearing for any exam. We human beings are continuously learning every moment using our five sense organs. In computers language, we call them input devices.

The information which these sense organs send to the brain doesn’t go directly to the brain; yeah, you got it right, it is not going directly. It has to wait before it reaches the brain in the waiting room.

The filters are applied to this information. There are mainly 3 types of filters Delete, Distort and Generalise. Due to these filters, when information reaches our brain gets deleted, distorted, and generalized. This activity happens in a fraction of seconds unknowingly. This waiting room is called the Reticular Activating System.

You might have experienced this, especially when you are addressing a group of people. When we pass the same information to them, everyone understands it differently. Let me prove this by the example.
